
The Princeton University Center for Human Values is inviting applications for the Harold T. Shapiro Postdoctoral Fellowship in Bioethics, starting around September 2025. This fellowship is designed to support exceptional scholars who are exploring ethical issues emerging from advancements in medicine, biological sciences, or the human population. Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that address practical issues with significant theoretical implications.
The fellowship is initially awarded for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability. The selected fellow will conduct research at Princeton and may teach up to one course per year, depending on course enrollment and approval from the Office of the Dean of the Faculty. Additionally, the fellow will participate in the Ira W. DeCamp Seminar in Bioethics and engage in various activities at the University Center for Human Values.
Qualifications:
- Open to candidates with a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree, or those expecting to complete one by the start of the fellowship.
- Applicants should have no more than two years of postdoctoral experience by the start date.
- Candidates from any related discipline are eligible, but their research must focus on bioethics.
- Selection will be based on the candidate’s past achievements and the potential of their research proposal. Teaching capacity will also be considered.
Fellowship Details:
- The fellowship begins on September 1, 2025, and lasts for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years based on satisfactory performance.
- Fellows will be appointed as Postdoctoral Research Associates, with the title of Lecturer if teaching is involved.

- Scholarly paper (no more than 12,000 words, excluding bibliography)

Selection and Announcement:
The selection committee will start reviewing applications immediately, and final decisions will be announced in March 2025. The fellowship is subject to Princeton University’s background check policy, and the position will require in-person work on campus.
