The Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness is now accepting applications for its prestigious 2026 Visiting Fellowship. This opportunity is designed to support global researchers, practitioners, and educators focused on statelessness by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange at the University of Melbourne.

Visiting Fellowship Overview

The Visiting Fellowship Scheme offers access to a professional academic environment, including a personal workspace, university library privileges, and IT support. Fellows are expected to actively engage with the Centre’s research community, participate in seminars, workshops, and contribute meaningfully to ongoing academic activities.

Funded Opportunity: One Visiting Fellowship Available

The Centre is offering one fully funded Visiting Research Fellowship for an outstanding applicant working in a field directly related to statelessness. The award includes up to AUD $6,000, intended to cover travel and accommodation expenses during the fellowship in Melbourne. The funded visit may take place anytime between July and November 2026.

Fellows will be required to:

  • Present their research at a faculty seminar or public event.
  • Contribute a post to the Critical Statelessness Studies blog, where applicable.

Eligibility and Application Process

The Centre encourages applications from a diverse pool of candidates, including:

  • Postdoctoral researchers
  • Established academics
  • Professionals working in statelessness-related fields
  • Individuals with lived experience of statelessness

Applicants should submit their materials as a single PDF document, including:

  1. Curriculum Vitae and list of publications
  2. Research plan (max. 1000 words) describing the proposed research, activities at the Centre, and collaborative aims
  3. Preferred dates for the visit
  4. Budget breakdown (up to AUD $6,000) including airfare and other related expenses
  5. One letter of reference (or employer support letter for non-academics)

Self-Funded Fellowships

The Centre also welcomes applications from self-funded researchers and professionals who wish to engage with its academic environment. Subject to availability, self-funded visitors will receive access to workspace, library, and computing facilities. Visitors are expected to actively participate in Centre events and research discussions.

Self-funded applications may be submitted year-round, and must include:

  1. Curriculum Vitae and list of publications
  2. Research plan (max. 1000 words) outlining proposed research, engagement at the Centre, and contribution
  3. Proposed dates for the visit
  4. One letter of reference or professional support letter (for non-academics)
